What is a five axis turntable?

The five axis turntable is a core auxiliary equipment in the field of CNC machining, belonging to high-precision mechanical transmission devices. On the basis of traditional three-axis machining machines (X, Y, Z linear axes), it adds two rotation axes (usually the A axis that rotates around the X axis and the B axis that rotates around the Y axis, or the C axis that rotates around the Z axis), forming a five axis linkage system of "three-axis linear motion+two axis rotational motion". Through numerical control system control, the two rotating axes can achieve 360 ° continuous rotation or arbitrary angle indexing positioning, driving the workpiece to present to the machining tool in any angle posture in space, breaking through the limitations of traditional three-axis machining.

What is the use of a five axis turntable?

The core value of a five axis turntable lies in solving complex surface machining problems and improving machining efficiency and accuracy. It is widely used in high-precision fields such as aerospace, precision molds, and high-end equipment manufacturing. Its specific functions include:

1. Realize full angle machining of complex surfaces

Multi dimensional machining capability: Through the linkage of two rotating axes, it is possible to perform seamless machining on parts with free-form surfaces, inverted structures, and inclined hole positions such as impellers, turbine blades, aircraft engine casings, and sculpture molds. For example, when machining aircraft engine blades, a five axis turntable can drive the blades to rotate to any angle, allowing the tool to cut in along the normal direction of the blade surface, avoiding the "tool marks" and accuracy loss of traditional three-axis machining.

Reduce tool interference: The rotating axis can adjust the posture of the workpiece, allowing the tool to contact the workpiece at the optimal angle, avoiding the risk of interference between the tool, fixture, and machine tool, especially suitable for processing complex structures such as deep cavities and narrow gaps.

2. Significantly improve processing efficiency and accuracy

Complete the entire process in one clamping: Traditional three-axis machining requires multiple clamping of the workpiece to switch the machining surface, while a five axis turntable can achieve five side machining (such as top, bottom, and four side surfaces) in one clamping by rotating the axis, reducing clamping times and positioning errors, and improving machining consistency.

High speed cutting and lightweighting: The rotating shaft supports the workpiece to rotate at high speed in conjunction with cutting tools, utilizing centrifugal force to achieve efficient material removal (such as high-speed milling of aluminum alloy structural components), while reducing tool load and extending service life.

3. Promote the upgrading of automation and intelligent manufacturing

Flexible production line adaptation: In automated production lines, the five axis turntable can be linked with robots and visual inspection systems to achieve automatic surface changing, positioning, and inspection of workpieces, improving the flexibility level of the production line. For example, in an automotive mold production line, the turntable can automatically adjust the mold posture according to a preset program and complete full-size inspection with laser scanning.

Complex trajectory programming support: With CAM software (such as UG, Mastercam), the five axis turntable can achieve complex trajectory movements such as spiral milling and variable axis cutting, meeting the integrated machining needs of overall structural components (such as aircraft frames) in the aerospace field, reducing part splicing errors, and improving structural strength.

4. Expand processing scenarios and application areas

Precision instruments and optical components: In the processing of precision parts such as optical lenses and laser prisms, a five axis turntable can achieve sub micron level accuracy in angle positioning, ensuring the surface shape accuracy and angle tolerance of optical surfaces (such as nanometer level processing of lithography machine mirrors).

Reverse engineering and rapid prototyping: By combining a turntable with 3D scanning equipment, complex prototype parts can be scanned from all angles to generate accurate 3D models for reverse design or 3D printing mold processing.
